Florian Wirtz makes Liverpool future clear amid Chelsea interest and Xabi Alonso reunion talk

Florian Wirtz has struggled to live up to expectations since completing his £116 million move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025.

The German enjoyed a title-winning spell at Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso. However, his first season at Anfield proved difficult after arriving with huge expectations.

Wirtz made 49 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring seven goals and providing six assists. He managed five goals and three assists across 33 Premier League matches.

His difficulties have continued during the 2026–27 season under Andoni Iraola, leading to further scrutiny over his performances.

Meanwhile, speculation about his future has increased despite Liverpool having no immediate plans to sell him. His current contract runs until June 2030.

Bayern Munich have shown interest, while Chelsea have also been linked with a move. Alonso's arrival at Stamford Bridge has fuelled talk of a reunion with his former Leverkusen star.

However, Wirtz has now made his position clear regarding those possibilities.

According to German football-centric X account Space, Wirtz wants to remain at Liverpool and has no plans to join Chelsea or Bayern Munich.

The account said: “Both remain unequivocally committed to #LFC and the mystique of Anfield, where Florian intends to carve his name into the history of football's greatest institution.”

Space later reported that “Xabi Alonso's Chelsea” continue “to closely monitor the situation surrounding Florian Wirtz”.

However, the account made clear that Chelsea should not expect Wirtz to change his position despite their continued interest.

It added: “However, any hopes of a potential move are firmly misplaced, with neither the player nor his representatives entertaining the possibility of a departure.

“Florian remains fully committed to #LFC, and a move to Stamford Bridge is simply not on the agenda.”

Therefore, despite the interest surrounding his future, Wirtz currently intends to continue his career at Liverpool rather than reunite with Alonso at Chelsea.
